A rumor by seemingly well informed insider:
They are seemingly going for an actress that is already on a CW show and looks a bit like Ruby
https://twitter.com/Vullein/status/1263463260080279552
Well, don't have an opinion on that as I don't have any clue who that could be.
-
P.S.: By the way I really like that the forum is slowly getting a little more active
That's the Peyton List thing I saw.
She has a wealth of previous work with The CW, looks like Ruby, is virtually the same age as Ruby, and is already familiar with Berlanti Productions.

@Siggi: You might consider updating your first article on potential Ruby Rose replacements with every single one of Peyton E. List's CW credentials, because they're really extensive.
CW series she's starred in or appeared in, along with the characters she's played:
* Smallville (Lucy Lane)
* One Tree Hill (Solaris Coburn)
* 90210 (Lindsey Beckwith)
* The Tomorrow People (Cara Coburn)
* The Flash (Lisa Snart/Golden Glider)
* Frequency (Raimy Sullivan)
* Charmed (Nadia),
If we're being technical, her Smallville and One Tree Hill appearances were for The WB Network, but it and The CW are essentially one and the same, so they still count.

Wallis Day's sexual orientation isnt, as far as I could determine, publicly known.
I think a lot of people think she might be because of tweets like these:
https://twitter.com/wallisday/status/1015634249209303040
https://twitter.com/wallisday/status/878511143614132225
Unless the actress actually says so though, it's largely speculation.
Oh, just found this, not related to sexuality, but just more about the fan-base enthusiasm:

Since the producers have said they will be seeking an actress from the LGBTQ community, I do think that the actress from the LGBTQ community should be one that has been open about her LGBTQ status and not someone believed to be straight and suddenly announces they are bisexual/ pansexual for the part.
Another question... will new Kate have tattoos?
The suspense is killing me but I trust the folks behind the show. They have accomplished great things throught season 1.

I think it's pretty clear that, regardless of how or why we got to the situation we're in, the Batwoman producers will just recast and carry on without explaining why Kate looks different.
Not only is a detail like that unimportant narratively, it kind of sets up the new actress for failure because it calls attention to the change.
I do think they'll 'lampshade' the situation at some point, but that's different than making the change in actress a narrative focus.

Perhaps I should just pick an actress and say "she is reportedly being eyed to become to new Batwoman" on a post over at my Blog.
I read somewhere the height for the new character was mentioned as 5' 3"At the height, there's no freakin' way she can fit in the Batsuit! And given Batwoman uses mostly hand-to-hand, that suit would need an exoskeleton to convince me that someone that short could take down someone the size of the Executioner!
As a comparison, Ruby is 5'7", Melissa is 5'8", Chyler Leigh is 5'6.5", Caity Lotz is 5'6", Katie Cassidy is 5'7.7", Juliana Harkavy is 5'8", Willa Holland is 5'6", Katherine McNamara is the shortest at 5'4.5" ... I know with martial arts, it's not the size or muscle that's important, but I think any shorter, and they're asking us to not just suspend our disbelief, but throw it completely down the disposal!

Whoever gets the role will have to be brave - considering how the last time Batwoman was cast went - with the addition of the new actress having to put up with constant comparisons to Ruby from the new Batwoman TV fanbase.

This will be a rather long text...but I just have a lot to say about the latest news on the Batwoman show.
-
I woke up some hours ago I turned on my phone for a quick check if something interesting happened while I was asleep.
Oh boy! My jaw dropped right to the floor! Really? Is that news for real? No joke? Oh my.....!!!!
As a HUGE fan of the show this news hit me like a train. And that after the news from last week with the January start date and the final episode of the season.
The lead actress of the show is leaving after season 1?!
This is something verrrry unusual as this just (normally) doesn't happen.
I can't think of many examples where that have happened in a TV show. OK, for example...in the Spartacus tv-show the main actor was replaced, but because he was very ill, as he had cancer. Certainly not a case which compares to this one. I'm sure there are some other examples, but not really from TV shows that I follow/ have followed.
-
The statements of Ruby and WB/CW can be found on the news site
Well, there are no reasons given for why she has left the show. Right now I can only speculate:
- Was it because of her injuries that forced her to leave nearly all action scenes to the stunt team? That was denied by some sources.
- Was it because of all the hate the show receives from the trolls and haters? Maybe
- Was it because she doesn't feel good working on a TV show instead of movies as it is quite the difference?
- Perhaps it was too expensive to keep her? I would say no, as these contracts are surely made for a long run and not only for one season.
- Was the network not happy about her in the role?
Well, I do hope that at some point we may get an answer to why she left, but I think that won't happen anytime soon
-
Actually there were some signs that something like that might happen.
Oddly enough I thought some monts back about the possibility of a recast for her role. But quickly I thought that things like that doesn't happen, so I discarded that thought quickly.
I was wondering why Ruby was doing so few promo events in the past month. I mean Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson and Rachel Skarsten did make a lot of promo for the show...on their social media accounts, on takeovers on Instagram, promo videos on youtube and so on. And Ruby, as the lead actress....only showed up on rare occasions. OK, I thought about if she had some sort of clause in her contract that she doesn't have to do such things. But I thought it was highly unusual.
Last week the CW released this promo image:
-
And I was thinking: Is that really Rube Rose on that picture as Batwoman??? I still think it isn't Ruby Rose!
Last week I thought: Ok, Ruby couldn't come to this promo shot because of the pandemic and all. I thought this might just be a random woman that was taken for a quick promo picture and they thought that no one would notice with the cowl on her head. But with the news that Ruby leaves the show....this image was perhaps a big, fat sign of the things to come....
-
What do I think about Ruby and her part on the show?
Well, I'm a HUGE fan of the show as you should know by now. And I will remain a HUGE fan until the end of the show, no matter what happens.
I wasn't the biggest fan of her being chosen for the role....at first. I mean in her roles in Meg, Resident Evil (Final chapter), XXX 3 and John Wick 2 her acting....was ok for me, but there was certainly room for improvement.
But I think the role really grew on Ruby and her acting improved over the season to a good level. Yet, Ruby always remained somehow in the shadow of Rachel Skarsten in my opinion. Ok, that may be because of the role as Alice is very different of course and offers a bigger variety.
I really like Ruby as an actress and as a human, but I am not a hardcore fan like so many seem to be (15 million followers on Instagram alone!).
-
What does this mean for the Batwoman show?
Well, it will be VERY ODD to see someone else in that role! But I am sure that I will get used to it when they drop all the promo images and vidoes ahead of season 2.
I hope that I am already "used" to the new actress when the new season starts.
The recast of Kate Kane/Batwoman is a BIG DANGER .....and A HUGE CHANCE at the same time!
Everything depends on WHO they actually choose for the role! It can get a disaster.....but it can also be also be a BIG chance!
WB and CW now have to be really careful of who to choose. Personally I think that the actress doesn't need to be from the LGBTQ community, even if it may fit to the role as a gay actress doesn't need to act that she's gay.
I don't have candidates right now, since I don't know about 99% of the actresses if they are gay or not, as I don't care about it.
My wishes for the casting would be like this:
- A rather tall and verrrrry well-trained actress, as it would fit really good to a crime fighting vigilante (in my opinion)
- An actress with an already established fanbase that then follows the show as well (like with Ruby)
- A woman that looks at least a little bit like Ruby....so that the transition gets a little easier
-
Surely many of the trolls and haters that this show attracted with a lesbian, badass, jewish woman with short hair in the lead role....might celebrate this recast as some kind of "victory" of their pathetic, hateful, troll-agenda. But actually, if they cast wisely....this can turn into the stellar opposite....a smashing DEFEAT for those creatures.
It's really sad how many folks are seemingly just on "social" media to spread their hateful opinions as they love to pull down others. But enough of that....
-
I know she won't read it...but I just wanna thank Ruby Rose for all that she has put into this show. THANKS RUBY!
My limited english can't really express how grateful I am for you being on the show. But you brought Batwoman and Kate Kane to life in your very own, unique way.
And whoever will follow your footsteps....you were the first Batwoman! I will never forget that
-
However we will get a new actress for the role as Batwoman and Kate Kane and the show will continue!
Ruby Rose has left the show....but BATWOMAN will return!

My fan-cast that will never happen is Sara Serraiocco from Counterpart. She played an assassin, who was also gay.

I couldn't find any proper clips from the series, so here is a music video I found instead, be warned it spoils parts from season 2 of Counterpart:

TVline just put up a exclusive article detailing what they are hearing happened.
https://tvline.com/2020/05/20/ruby-rose-batwoman-season-2-departure-scoop/
According their source,Ruby didn't adjust well to leading a network T.V. Show nor the Vancouver shooting location which resulted in a not fun set.
So both sides felt it was better to part ways.

Personally, I thought Ruby was AWESOME as Batwoman. After all, Caroline said that they wanted a "Ruby Rose type" to play the role, so I think she totally nailed the character. And, yeah, I will admit, that she is totally "my type"! She's going to be a hard act to follow. I can't imagine anyone else in the role, but we'll see who they come up with. They have a few months to find someone before shooting (potentially) picks up this Fall.
And I have to say, I totally disagree with you, Siggi, about the actor not having to be a lesbian. That is very much one of the main reasons they chose to do Batwoman in the first place, and one of it's main selling points - a lesbian playing the lead character who happens to be a lesbian. Fans of Sci-FI as we are, we tend to be more accepting of those outside the mainstream (partly because so many of us ARE outside the mainstream). Sadly, the mainstream is not so enlightened, especially here in the U.S. (geez, look at the troll squatting in our White House and the appalling amount of support he still has!). We NEED shows like this to educate the mainstream. To us, it may seem like the CW goes a little overboard with all the LGBTQ+ characters and the bi-racial couples, etc, but to a lot of the mainstream, this is shocking stuff bordering on heresy! And as long as it stays in the closet, so will we. And speaking personally, that closet got really stuffy! {climbs off soapbox}
I doubt the reason for her leaving was because of those idiot hateful trolls. She's been dealing with them for years, so I doubt it's anything new. I kinda worry about the stalker types that post they want to marry her! That, to me, is really creepy!
I had also noticed a distinct lack of promoting the show on Ruby's personal instagram page, and wondered about it. Not sure how much stock I put in tvline.com, but she was carrying a lot of the show on her shoulders, just in terms of screen time alone. Plus having to wear that suit (how many cowl modifications did they go thru?), it's a very physical role (a lot of fight scenes in and out of the Batsuit), and a whole lot of night shoots - I can see where that would wear someone down.
There was some great chemistry between Ruby and many of the other cast members, so I wonder how that is going to translate with the new Kate? I have to admit, I'm not looking forward to a Batwoman without Ruby, but I will definitely give it a chance. Who knows, we may be pleasantly surprised.

@athena69:
Well, about the "actress has to be a lesbian" aspect.
Actually I think it's a very difficult topic....
Certainly it makes sense to choose a gay actress as it supports the community and well.....it fits better.
And yeah, it is something the CW wants to have for this show and many folks from the community are really happy about it.
On the other hand: If you say that.....you exclude ...let's say.... 95% of the actresses from the casting as they are not gay (at least openly). You severly limit your options to choose from.
I mean ok, there should be enough candidates that fits the casting....but it leaves a strange flavor in my opinion.
And also I remember that insane ramblings that Ruby "wasn't gay enough" for the role.
However as the CW/WB has made that decision, let's see who the can get.
-
So far, the profile would look like that....in my opinion:
- a gay actress
- circa 20-30 years old
- must be affordable for the CW
- wants to play in a TV show for a long time period (hopefully)
- also she should be caucasion/white (since they can't recast Alice and Jacob to fit to her)
- she should be taller and (even) better trained then Ruby....that would fit even better to a crime fighting vigilante...(in my opinion)
Looking forward to see the lists of candidates that fit into this description!

I absolutely agree that saying it HAS to be a lesbian does limit the possibilities. Believe me, I know! But the film industry is always looking for actors who fit a certain image, usually based on looks. This is just another (different) type of criteria. Personally, I think there are more of "us" out there than most people realize. ("They" estimate that approximately 10% of the population is homosexual, but I think it's more than that because there's still so much hatred out there that people aren't willing to come out. YET!)
As for the "not gay enough", that's just the (straight, homophobic) trolls, who don't know squat, trying to find something to diss on. Ruby definitely pings on gaydar! But, they don't need to find a "gay-looking" actress, they need to find a lesbian. Big difference. That said, I think the new actress should match up with some of the stereotypes - short haircut (better to fit in the cowl), boyish physique, more "butch" than "femme". Julia and Sophie, despite their combat training, I would say are more "femme" than "butch". But then, neither actress is lesbian, yet I don't hear anyone crying that they're "not gay enough".
I do agree with your final criteria she should be taller and (even) better trained than Ruby. Ruby was dwarfed by all those hulking men she was fighting, making it hard to believe sometimes that she could kick their butts, even is a suit that makes her stronger.
I couldn't find any reference to Sara Serraiocco being a lesbian herself, but an article I read leads me to believe that she is not, she just played one. I suspect that, as with the other CW shows, they'll go with someone relatively unknown this time.
I just hope that whoever they find, she's blue-eyed!

The comments about Ruby not being "gay enough" came from within the LGBT community.
Treat this as a rumor until/unless it gets confirmed, but I was browsing Twitter and came across someone saying that CW and Arrowverse alumnus Peyton List (Smallville, One Tree Hill, 90210, The Tomorrow People, The Flash, Frequency, Charmed) is being heavily looked at by Batwoman producers as Ruby’s replacement.
I can’t find any information about her sexual orientation in order to verify whether or not she fits the producers’ and network’s stated intent of casting someone who is a member of the LGBTQ community, but she does bear a physical similarity to Ruby, is already acclimated to the rigors of leading a TV series, and has pre-existing connections with the people at Berlanti Productions , WarnerMedia, and The CW.
She was also born the same year as Ruby (1986), although she's 5 months older.
